 New Additions
Recently my messages have a stuttered or echoed sound. How can I fix this?

The QuickTime 7.3 update caused an incompatibility with the 3GPP format used by PhoneValet. To fix this, PhoneValet 5 users should update to PhoneValet 5.3.2 or later. This will not fix past recordings but future recordings will not be affected.

Users of PhoneValet version 4 and earlier should switch to use the AAC format in the General Preferences under Recordings, or purchase an upgrade to PhoneValet 5 on our online store.

CallerID
Some of my calls do not have caller ID information. Is there something wrong?
In most countries, there are three types of calls:
  • Those with Caller ID
  • Those marked "Out of Area" - The number in the caller ID is actually O. This is sent for overseas calls, or from other phone networks where they didn't pass any caller ID information on to your phone system. No name or number is logged for these calls.
  • Those market "Private" - the number in the caller ID is P. Typically unlisted calls will show up as Private on your telephone. No name or number is logged for these calls

If you get the second or third type of call, no name or number will be logged. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with PhoneValet.

Fax
How do I make PhoneValet detect a fax if I've answered a call before PhoneValet?

If you've answered a call before PhoneValet and you hear fax tones, choose "Answer Fax Now" from the PhoneValet icon in the menu bar. PhoneValet will then instruct your chosen fax software to answer the fax. Wait until you hear fax tones from your computer before hanging up.

Miscellaneous
Can PhoneValet answer calls while my Mac is sleeping?

PhoneValet does not wake the Mac from sleep - MacOS X cannot wake up fast enough to retrieve the caller ID signalling (which is sent between the first and second ring), and often several rings have passed resulting in the caller to stop waiting and hanging up before PhoneValet to answer.

You can enable any other sleep settings for the screen, hard disks, and any processor performance settings, since these will not affect PhoneValet. You should not set the computer to go to sleep, though.

Can Time Machine be used to automatically back up my Parliant database?

No. Your Parliant database contains many files that need to remain in sync with each other. Time Machine was developed to backup single files and not multi-file databases.

However, if you make a backup by choosing the Backup command in the File menu, it will archive the database to a single file that can be safely backed up with Time Machine.

Does PhoneValet let you talk on the telephone through your Mac?

No. PhoneValet is aimed at letting you get the most out of your existing telephones. PhoneValet can help you dial, and can take messages, but it does not currently let you take a phone call using a microphone and speakers on the computer.

Some excellent telephone headsets (both wired and wireless) are available to help you make phone calls. PhoneValet is compatible with all normal telephone gear, such as headsets, and will still log, dial and record your calls as needed.

How do I uninstall Parliant software?

An uninstaller application is located in the Extras folder on your CD or in the disk image downloaded from Parliant's site.

OEM
Can I write my own application that uses Parliant's USB Telephone Adapter?

Parliant is considering writing an API for Cocoa and Carbon developers to use our hardware for custom telephony applications. If you are interested in using an API, please contact us to discuss what features you would like to see available.

Orders
I ordered software via your web site but it did not send me my new license code?

When you place an order you are always emailed a confirmation after your order was placed. If you ordered an electronic-only product such as PhoneValet Anywhere, or a software upgrade, it will be emailed to you approximately five to ten minutes after your order. If you ordered a physical product (for example, PhoneValet Message Center) along with an electronic-only product, your license for this electronic-only product will be sent when the physical items have shipped.

If you did not receive expected email from us, please check your junk mail filter in your email application. It is possible your junk mail filter accidentally filtered our email. If you download mail from an online mail service such as Yahoo or GMail, please log on to those servces to check the junk mail filter there. If there was a problem with your order (for example, if an incorrect code was entered, or there is a billing issue), our staff will be notified and will contact you.

If after a business day, you still do not receive your licenses, please contact us.

Recording
What audio formats are supported for voice mails and call recordings?

PhoneValet supports two versions of 3GPP, two versions of AAC, and WAV file formats for audio recordings and messages. The 3GPP file formats offer excellent quality and very small size (76 KB/minute). That means you could store over 191 days of 3GPP call recordings on a 20GB hard disk! The "3GPP Optimized for Treo" format is similar to regular 3GPP but is slightly larger. It is for compatibility with Treo smartphones and may work on other mobile phones as well.

With the AAC format you get easy compatibility with Apple's iTunes — you can carry your call recordings and voice mails with you on your iPod! The "AAC Optimized for iPhone" format is half the size of regular AAC, has slightly less audio quality, but is for faster downloading over EDGE networks.

The WAV format gives you easy access to source audio data for those who want to process their recordings, WAV is compatible with virtually any Windows PC without any added software.

If you are sending calls to a Windows PC and want to use 3GPP and/or AAC files, the Windows PC should have QuickTime for Windows installed.

Requirements
Can I use PhoneValet with my PBX or KSU Phone System?

PhoneValet can work with PBX and KSU telephone systems. Depending on how it must connect, some features may not be usable. See our page on connecting to a PBX or KSU for more information.

iPhone
Can I play PhoneValet emailed messages on my iPhone?

As of September 27, 2007, the iPhone 1.1.1 software update supports playback of audio attachments through email. Please install this update in your iPhone. In the PhoneValet General Preferences, under Recordings, set the format to either WAV, AAC, or AAC Optimized for iPhone - these three formats can be played back on iPhone.
